Living Arts (Y152)
This course introduces some of the key ideas and ways of thinking involved in studying the arts and humanities through Literature and Music using examples from a wide range of novels, short stories, poems, and music.
Start Writing Family History (A173)
This 12 week online course helps you interpret and write about family history. Using sources from different historical periods, you will investigate the changing nature of the family and write about your own family history examining the ways in which the past is remembered and represented.
An Introduction to the Social Sciences: Understanding Social Change (DD100)
The social sciences are about people – how they act both individually and collectively. This course will help you understand some of the big issues in the contemporary world, such as changes in family, work and identity, risk and the environment, and the impact of globalisation.
An Introduction to the Humanities (A103)
This course offers you a lively and varied grounding in the eight disciplines in the Arts Faculty: art history, literature, music, philosophy, classical studies, history, religious studies and history of science.
Second and third level courses
Exploring the English Language (U211)
The English language is spoken by about 1000 million people worldwide. Including interviews with world experts on different aspects of the English Language, this course asks, But why English? How has it changed over the centuries? How is it affected by its new settings, the people who use it and the technologies they employ?
Creative Writing (A215)
This course helps you develop as a writer, and encourages you to value your own resources of memory, observation and voice. It is suitable for new writers, and those who want to develop their skills, as well as anyone who would like to deepen their understanding of writing techniques and the creative process.
The Art of English (E301)
This course takes a creative look at the English language, from the everyday conversation, children’s language, letter writing, and internet chat to “high culture” literary language. It has an international dimension, too, exploring language in different parts of the English speaking world.
English Grammar in Context (E303)
This course explores how basic structures of English grammar function in different contexts such as the media, fiction, academic writing and everyday conversation, and provides a framework for describing and analysing the English language as used in the world today.
