systems practice, managing complexity
Models change and evolve with new experience, values, beliefs and priorities. Hopefully, they also change when challenged by new information. Conflict arises when people are convinced that their version (i.e. model) of reality is a 'truer' representation of reality than others.

Metaphors and language are also models. So are mathemetical equations, many computer programmes (e.g. for forecasting) and economic and accounting procedures. Another type of diagrammatic model that can help you get your head round a complex situation systemically is a multiple cause diagram.
