Comments:
Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in
1781, who thought it was a comet. The seventh
planet
from the Sun, Uranus is a gas giant. It
is the third largest planet in
our Solar System with a diameter four times
bigger than the Earth, and is unusual in
that it rotates on its side.
This may
be result of collision with large object
in
the early
days of the solar system. As a result,
the
polar
regions of this planet sometimes receive
more solar radiation than its equator.
Its bluey-green appearance is a result
of the absorption of red light by its upper
atmosphere, which consists mainly of methane.
It has faint bands of clouds which can only be
seen with image enhancement. The temperature
at the cloud
tops
is
about -215 degrees C
It lies
two billion miles away from the Sun (almost
20 times further
than Earth). A day on Uranus lasts 14 hrs 42
mins (so it rotates very fast), and a year
lasts 84
Earth years.
Uranus has a system of rings (like Saturn
but not as impressive) made
up of dust and small debris, which were discovered
in 1977.
It has at least twenty moons, all named
after characters from Shakespeare plays, the
five
biggest are Ariel,
Umbriel, Titania, Miranda and Oberon.
