Is the cult of celebrity just old-fashioned entertainment or is it bad for us?
Katrina Skepper says that fame is not what it’s cracked up to be:
"I think if you’re perhaps born with a talent initially you probably want to exploit that talent be it as a musician, a footballer or an actor. But ultimately what drives you is the desire to be successful and famous. If you ask people what drives them to become famous it tends to always be the money, success and the lifestyle. In history you think people are famous for what they’ve achieved but nowadays a person can become famous for being famous - quite literally!
Being famous for doing great things no longer seems to be the end goal. If you achieve maximum column inches or photo shoots you’re putting your mark on society by just being a celebrity. We hear more and more famous people moaning about the press and obsessed fans but of course there’s a down side to being a celebrity. You couldn’t expect all the adulation and money without a downside. The public buy into you therefore they feel they have a right to know about you.
However, there don’t seem to be the right boundaries in place to protect the celebrity. I’m not famous in the true sense of the word but I think that overall fame is probably not what it’s cracked up to be!"
