The following sky notes describe what may be seen in the night sky, soon after sunset at the beginning of May, for an observer situated in the UK.

High overhead as darkness falls is the distinctive shape of the Plough, part of the constellation of Ursa Major (the “Great Bear”). Extend a line through the front two stars (the pointers) to locate Polaris the Pole Star.
