The following sky notes describe what may be seen in the night sky, soon after sunset at the beginning of August, for an observer situated in the UK.

The annual Perseid meteor shower is active between 23rd July and 20th August, with peak activity around the night of 12/13th when many tens of meteors may be seen during the early morning hours. As twilight falls the bright star Vega in Lyra is almost overhead. To the east is the star Deneb in Cygnus (the Swan or Northern Cross). To the south completing the “Summer Triangle” is Altair in Aquila (the Eagle).
