Rob England - five naked eye planets

Famous Five Go West

Dear Final Frontier,
Please find attached: An Image of the five naked eye planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus & Mercury setting over the Welsh side of the M4 road bridge in Gloucestershire.

I have called it "Famous Five Go West" I consider it to be the best exposure of a series of 12 shots taken on the evening of the 2nd May 2002 between 21.30 and 22.30. I bracketed several exposures and this one gave the best colour in the sky and shows Jupiter upper left, Saturn Mars & Venus centre and Mercury right on the terminator at dusk.

It was quite a pleasure to be able to take this shot as it was done on impulse. Just before nine that evening I looked out of the window at home and thought it's now or never. As all the rest of the week had been cloudy I considered this to be my only chance to capture the event. I had also told a friend a week or two before, it would be great to see the five naked-eye planets all in the same part of the sky. 'Although, I would not in all probability get to photograph them.' Anyway, I do hope you can use it.

Many Thanks R. England.
