Renaissance Astronomy - 15th & 16th Century
Copernicus was around between 1473 and 1543, and he completely transformed the way scientists saw the universe. He was very influenced by Christianity, and came to believe that the Sun was a material copy of God - a giver of light and warmth. This made his revolutionary proposition that the Sun was at the centre of the universe much more palatable for his contemporaries.
Copernicus
Tycho Brahe Tycho Brahe, on the other hand - who lived from 1546 till 1601 - thought that the Sun Moon and stars revolved around the Earth. His model was mathematically equivalent to Copernicus', but conveniently it didn't violate scripture or 'common sense.' Although he turned out to be wrong, Brahe was one of the best observational astronomers who ever lived. Without using a telescope, he managed to measure he positions of the planets to within a few arc minutes.
