The prevailing
belief system in Europe by the time of the 16th Century was that
Man was God's special creation in a mathematically planned, physical
universe, and that the Earth was at its centre. The Greek ideal
of using reason and logic was rediscovered during this period, hence
the term 'renaissance'. Thinkers were generally guided by 'Occam's
Razor' : the idea that the simplest theories are the best ones.
