All living beings are made up of tiny microscopic units called cells. Some, like primitive organisms found in ponds, consist simply of a single cell. Others, like humans, begin life as a single cell, but grow into a vast complex of many different cell types, with each cell performing a specialised function.

While towns and cities vary greatly in size, no matter where they are in the world, they share many similar features. Likewise, despite the vast variety of life forms and cell types, different shapes and sizes, all cells have many features in common. We are going to concentrate on animal cells, but most of the same basic structures and organising principles apply equally well to cells in plants as they do to cells in humans. Travel from outer space on a journey of discovery, into the depths of a single cell.
