How we did it

At the end of each hard day's rising to the challenges, our scientists sat down to confess all to their video diaries.

Facing the challenge

What sort of person takes on a Rough Science challenge? Meet the scientists.

You've seen our scientists get to grips with the challenges, using only their wits, some bits - and their scientific knowledge. But what are the principles that let them pull off their challenges? Join us, week by week, for a closer look what was going on...

Inside power - While working to get their electricity and gas up and running, the team are reliant on candle power. But what's the science converting a lump of wax into light?

Inside safety - Limestone plays a key part in the clean-up operation at the mine. Discover more about this rock's properties.

Inside mountain - It turns out that the mountain the team is on was once a volcano; and that means the area has been subjected to the effects of explosions.

Inside clean - The team work hard to remove the effects of sweat - but why were they perspiring in the first place?

Inside mine - Detecting radioactivity is all well and good, but what exactly are we testing for?
