Classic Rough Science

A one-man space mission - the challenge was to get a mission off the ground. Discover how Mike Bullivant became a rocket man.
Not all science has to be done at the top of Colorado mountains - you can study in your own time in your own home and beyond with an Open University course. Here's some suggestions which draw on the themes explored by this series of Rough Science:

Fossils And The History Of Life (S193) - this course will give you a basic understanding of fossils and an overview of the history of life. It will enable you to explain how organisms become fossilized, help you to identify the common fossils you are likely to find.

Breakthrough to Mathematics, Science And Technology (Y153) - if you‘re interested in the environment, or want to study biology, science or mathematics, then this course will show you how science can analyse the effect that humans have on the world.

Discovering Science (S103) - learn more about a range of topics, from global warming to the origin of life, ecology and genetics to earthquakes and volcanoes, chemical reactions and the structure of atoms in the origins of the Universe.

Practising Science (SXR103) - in this residential school course you’ll undertake interdisciplinary scientific investigations in laboratories and at a field location, and work through the Practising Science Study Book.

Environmental Science (S216) - this wide-ranging course draws together biology, chemistry, Earth science and physics, so that you develop an holistic approach encompassing the processes, links, interactions and feedback mechanisms that operate within different environments.

Earth’s physical resources: Origin, Use And Environmental impact (S278) - this course is about the occurrence, availability, exploitation and sustainability of these essential resources. You'll also consider their origins, how to find and extract them, and the environmental consequences of exploitation, including lessons from the past and expectations for the future.
