These gardens were established as a royal garden of medicinal plants, and were first opened to the general public in 1650. The gardens are typical of their time, being formally laid out with statuary and trees.

These are the most popular botanical gardens in France, covering a total of 28 hectares.
When they were first established in the late 17th century, some of the most renowned botanists were invited to assist with the running of the gardens and their work led to the gardens' considerable and enduring reputation.
