Discover the roots of modern architecture.
Arrival (1928 - 1939)

Post-war optimism (1945 - 1960)
Britain emerged from WW2 broke, exhausted and facing a housing crisis, but a sense of optimism still dominated architecture from 1945 - 1960.
Doubts (1953 - 1961)
Modern Architecture has frequently been blamed for a catalogue of social ills, in particular the rundown housing estates and tower blocks of Britain's post-war housing, 1953 - 1961.
The Bubble Bursts (1961 - 1979)
Modernism had become the lingua franca of British architecture by 1961 - 1979.
Post Modernism (1979 - 1992)
Architects rejected Modernist orthodoxy, adopting the theory that "less is not more, less is a bore", from 1979 - 1992.
Revival (1993 -)
The last decade of the twentieth century saw the beginnings of a revival in the standing of Modernist Architecture, from 1993 onwards.
