Programme Four:

Small Scale Projects

Are small scale projects that are supported by international aid agencies really able to change people’s lives? In this programme Simon finds out more about a water project in the village of Kayunga, Uganda. This is a project that has helped to improve the lives of hundreds of people by giving them access to clean, healthy water.

But not everybody believes that project funding is the best way forward. Critics would argue, for example, that they create dependency. Lots of projects working in the same area can clash and end up doing more harm than good. Tim Allen who teaches Development Management at the UK’s Open University and the London School of Economics states:
“I have no doubt that some of the projects I have seen in Uganda have really improved people's lives. But I have also seen some really scandalous situations.”

In this programme Simon looks at some of the criticisms but also discovers how aid agencies can work to benefit the lives of people in developing countries.
