National
Cash Register Company (NCR) 1884
The
National Cash Register Company was founded in 1884 by
John H. Patterson. They made the first mechanical cash
registers. In 1952 it acquired the Computer Research Corporation
(CRC) and produced a line of digital computers that were
subsequently used in aviation. 1982 saw the first NCR
Tower super-microcomputer system launched, a machine which
established NCR as a pioneer in bringing industry standards
and open systems architecture to computing. In 1991, the
same year the company was purchased by AT & T, it, in
turn, acquired the Teradata Corporation, which resulted
in the creation of the NCR Teradata, a powerful database
system. The company’s computer hardware section was sold
off in 1998, and the company has since focused on merchandise
management applications, such as cheque-processing software
and database applications. |
