HOW
DOES A COMPUTER WORK?
Anyone
who’s ever ventured under the case of their personal computer
knows that it is made up of a frighteningly large number
of components. But once you get past the shock of seeing
circuit boards in their natural environment, it becomes
apparent that there are some key
components that make up your computer. These are the
motherboard, microprocessor,
hard disk, CD-ROM drive and graphics card. Your computer
also has a number of peripherals hanging off of it, the
keyboard, mouse, monitor and printer, to name a few. But
hardware alone does not a computer make. It needs software.
If you were to use the analogy of the human brain, then
the hardware makes up the head, including the brain itself,
and the software is the thinking. Software includes the
computer’s operating system, which communicates with the
hardware, and the applications, which may include word
processors, spreadsheets and databases. |
