File

A file is a collection of information that a computer uses. It is always stored in a particular format.
For example, a Web page is a file that is saved in html format. This format allows applications such as browsers to open them and read them. A file usually has a filename, followed by a full stop, and then a three or four letter file extension. (E.g. index.htm)
