PORTABILITY
The more you look into it, the more computing is infiltrating every aspect of our lives. We keep ourselves organised with PDAs , mobile telephones allow us to browse websites, send e-mail and SMS messages, and now we can access unprotected wireless LANs to connect to the Internet (for free!)

The latest craze is to “warchalk” unprotected wireless LANs to indicate to other users the existence of open networks. London information architect Matt Jones proposed the chalking of a double curve symbol on pavements and walls near the wireless networks in June 2002. Within weeks the symbols were springing up around the globe – a new revolution in mobile computing?

Computers are getting smaller and more mobile – mobiles are getting more powerful and PDAs no longer only keep addresses and small notes. Mobile computing is here, and as technology merges we will see digital cameras, mp3 players and other types of digital technology getting smaller and incorporated into hand-held devices.

If you want to know more about the history of portable devices, take a look at our portability timeline.
