| Design
and publishing have been transformed by computing software,
with applications ranging from image manipulation, painting,
layout, vector graphics, 3D imagery and animation, through
to specialised web design tools. These days the design
team spend less time sharpening their pencils and more
time crafting a “look”.
Film and
video have also had a make over. Computer software has
freed editors from the tyranny of linear tape editing,
creating a process that is much more flexible (although
not necessarily as fast). In moving pictures, this has
created a more filmic process, open to change and creativity.
Don’t believe what you see on the screen these
days, odds are it’s not real. Composting software
allows the integration of multiple image elements to
create entire virtual environments for film and television.
The music
industry has had a bit of a shock with the digital revolution.
Mp3 music downloads have circumvented the traditional
music publishing industry. No longer do you have to
wait for a certain track to be published in your country,
just download it off the net. The same technology can
allow unsigned artists to gain an audience beyond their
local communities.
Computing
is exciting – and what makes it so is a combination
of rapid improvements in hardware and ever improving
software. Who knows how computing will change our lives
in the future? One thing is for certain; it’s
the software that makes computing funky.
