SOFTWARE
PROGRAMS
Can you remember what an office was like before word processors?
Remember the memo? Or possibly you worked in an office
with teletext - machines clattering away ceaselessly…
Computer software packages have revolutionised how we
conduct our day-to-day work. From office applications
through to engineering and design, we can now type, draw,
model and plan - in fact the possibilities are now endless!
Word processing has replaced the clack-clack of manual
and electric typewriters. The memo has disappeared,
its function taken over by e-mail. Doing some bookkeeping?
We now have spreadsheets and databases to help you keep
track of things. We even have presentation tools, such
as powerpoint, to help you win that client.
Engineering
has moved from the drafting board to the screen. Engineers
use computer-aided design (CAD) to shape our future,
and simulation packages that can calculate anything
from liquid flow to stress fractures in metals. Architecture
also uses drafting tools - CAD packages such as AutoCAD,
Mini CAD and ArchiCAD, to aid the design of our future
cityscapes.
Factory processes have larger scale
computing and automation systems than you would find
in the average office. Product manufacturing can use
software processes right from initial design, through
the manufacturing process and beyond. Robotics could
not exist without computerisation.
