Get
involved in an innovative
national survey
This year the Child of our Time children are starting school. As part of the next series, to be broadcast early in 2005, we are going to run a survey for schoolchildren in Yrs 1 - 6, and their teachers, throughout the country.
Our last survey, carried out during the transmission of the 2004 series, generated over 45,000 responses as we asked viewers of all ages to consider their self images and the various facets of these.
For the 2005 series,
we are asking teachers at foundation, KS1 and KS2 levels
- and their pupils - to spend
some time looking
at the following
themes:
- Families: Through circle time discussion we will be inviting children to think about and discuss what makes a good Mum and a good Dad. They will be given a range of descriptions to choose from and rank, considering what are the most important qualities of being a good parent. They will also be asked to consider which public figures and celebrities might make good Mums or Dads. Downloadable data sheets and an interactive website will enable easy data entry into the national survey
- Screen Time: The class activities and the data collection exercise will explore how big a part different media play in children's lives and how they respond to them. Among the questions to be asked will be: How many TVs are there in the home? What are children's preferences for different sorts of 'screen time'?
- Identity: Through an interactive web page and a downloadable data collection sheet, children will be asked to select from a range of photographs which children they are most like and which children they would like to choose to do things with. These data can then be easily entered into the national survey.
The activities reflect a cross-curricular approach with opportunities for children to apply their learning in core and foundation subjects, with links to science, numeracy, PSHE and Citizenship. Children can compare different ways of presenting information, and identify trends and their meanings. Further information on the activities can be found in the download at the bottom of this page.
The Open University will analyse and publish the results of this survey, and the results will form an important part of the TV programme research. The Child of our Time programmes will then be able to link the 25 children featured in the series with national trends.
Your school should have received an invitation to take part. Please fill in the details below to register, and we will email you with details of how to access the surveys.
