AA310 Film and Television History
The British New Wave Cinema comprises a core constituent of this course. Written by film historians for people who want to study film and television history, AA310 is the first full-credit course devoted to film and television to be offered by The Open University. Big in scope, the course starts with Citizen Kane and the golden age of Hollywood and ends with a pioneering study of television genres. It focuses particularly on the social role and cultural influence of film and television in Britain, America and Western Europe.
The course is generously resourced with materials that include thirteen full length feature films, including Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Rear Window, Fargo, Alfie and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. There are extracts from British films, programmes on French and German cinema, extracts from Italian films, as well as complete copies of a Wednesday Play production of Up the Junction, two Armchair Theatre productions of The Scent of Fear and Lena, Oh My Lena, and episodes from The Avengers, Doctor Who and Adam Adamant Lives. The course is presented as part of the Open University's undergraduate Arts Faculty programme.
